Friar Minor Monastry, Church and garden

In the mid-13th century, the minor brothers came to our regions. In 1257, Abbot Willem van Rijkel gave them land to build a monastery and church there. The complex is built around two courtyards with a 17th-century core. The fathers were able to retreat to the monastery building and the walled garden. In the garden you will find the only remains of the medieval city wall. The monastery has been uninhabited since 2019 and the Minderbroederskerk is no longer accessible to the public. You can always visit the museum ‘de Mindere’, which is located at the former monastery building.

The museum DE MINDERE evokes the interesting life of Franciscus of Assissi and his followers, the Franciscan Friars.

The Beguinage

The fully restorated Benguinage Church has been protected as a monument from 1933.  This late Romanesque – early Gothic Church is famous for its 38 murals from the 14th till the 16th century. These murals are seen as one of the most impressive ensembles of the country because of their monumental finish and implementation throughout the entire interior.

The 17th Century organ, made by Christian Ancion from Hoie is the oldes functioning organ in the whole country (1644-1646)
