Fruit Valley

The Fruit Valley, a tasteful landscape

In the fertile valley along the Molenbeek, wild bees work hard in the orchard and fruit trees colour the landscape. You pass the historic Stayen mill and Maasrode basin, where sheep love to graze. The blue trail takes you to a tranquil spot where you can have fun playing on a giant slide over the water. Walking one of the longer routes? Be sure to continue to the Wilderen village distillery, known for its rich history and traditional craftsmanship.

Highlights along the way

WILD BEES IN THE ORCHARD
Bees play a crucial role in the pollination of native plants, farm crops and fruit trees. They find safe shelter in blossoms and insect hotels. During this walk, you will also learn more about old high-stem cherry varieties, each with their own distinctive character.

THE TASTEFUL LANDSCAPE
Did you know… that an apple tree and a pear tree resemble the shape of the fruit they bear? Due to pruning techniques and modern planting methods, this shape is harder to recognise in low-stem fruit trees. But you can also identify a fruit tree by its trunk: a pear tree has an older, thicker trunk with an almost crackled appearance. An apple tree is usually thinner and smoother. High-stem orchards are carefully protected in Sint-Truiden.

GREEN ENERGY FROM WATER
Until 1980, the protected Stayen mill was in operation as a grain mill. Today, it generates green energy using water for both the miller and the Lucas Creativ art gallery. Visitors are welcome during opening hours.

35 MILLION LITRES OF WATER
The Maasrode basin is a floodplain that can store around 35 million litres of water when necessary. Water — the source of all life for residents and farmers — is always around here.

TASTE HESBAYE’S GOLD
Take a short detour from the route and pause at the beautifully restored brewery and distillery belonging to Mike and Roniek in the distillery village of Wilderen. Taste the delicious ‘Hesbaye gold’ or discover locally produced whisky. Can you stay a little longer? Then join a guided tour and dive into the history of the brewery.

TIP…
Discover the visitor centre in the mysterious church tower of Wilderen. But be sure to make an appointment with Jos first.
