Market Square and Groenmarkt

Grand Market Square

The Grand Market Square of Sint-Truiden is immense, covering more than two hectares. The square originated about ten centuries ago. Around 1060, the settlement was granted trading and market rights. The abbey then helped turn its “front yard” into a lively trading square. Today, the square is still bustling with activity.

Three towers dominate the Grand Market Square: the hall tower (belfry) of the town hall, the abbey tower, and the tower of the Church of Our Lady.

Take a moment to admire the beautiful patrician houses surrounding the square, some of which date back to the 17th century.

Near the Grand Market Square, you may almost unnoticed come across a stumbling stone: a small, shiny memorial embedded in the streetscape. The stone commemorates a local victim of the Holocaust and invites you to pause and reflect on this part of the city’s past. Interested in the full route? Groenmarkt

The renovated Groenmarkt opened in September 2020. The outlines of the Clerks’ Chapel, discovered during excavations prior to the works, light up in color between the Old Town Hall and the Church of Our Lady. The fountains adorn the square and make the city center a pleasant place to relax.
