ベルギーのシント・トロイデンという町をご存知ですか？ 地元サッカークラブのKシントトロイデンVVには、冨安健洋選手、 遠藤航選手、鎌田大地選手、関根貴大選手といった日本人の選手も所属しているので、ニュースで耳にしたことがあるかもしれません。今回はそんなシント・トロイデンについて、ご紹介します。

シント・トロイデンは、ブリュッセルから東へ66km、ハッセルトやトンゲレンから西へ約20km、ベルギー東部のリンブルグ州にある町です。町の歴史は、西暦650年頃にフランク王国の聖トルードが建てた教会と修道院にさかのぼるとされ、そこからシント・トロイデンという名がつけられています。小さな町ですが、世界遺産もあり歴史と趣きが感じられる古都です。また、この地域はハスペンゴーHaspengouwと呼ばれるヨーロッパの中でも有数の果物栽培地区となっていて、リンゴ、洋ナシ、サクランボ、イチゴ、プラムなどが栽培される果物の里としても知られています。

Do you know the town named Sint-Truiden in Belgium? Japanese football players such as Tomiyasu Takehiro, Endo Wataru, Kamada Daichi,  Sekine Takahiro etc. belong to the local football team, KSTVV, so you might have heard it in the news. This time, I will introduce you to Sint-Truiden.

Sint-Truiden is 66 km away from Brussels to the east, about 20 km away from Hasselt to the west, located in the east of Flanders in the province of Limburg, in Belgium. The history of the town dates back to 650 A.D. the time of the Frankish Kingdom. Sint-Truiden is derived from Trudo, the Frankish aristocrat who built a church and monastery there. Even though it’s small, it has long history with an old town center full of world heritage and atmosphere. In addition, the area around is one of the major fruit cultivation districts of Europe, called Haspengouw. That’s why the village is also famous for growing fruits like apple, pear, cherry, strawberry, plum.

• 市庁舎（世界遺産） |  City Hall (World Heritage)

市庁舎には中世からのホールと付随する鐘楼があり、塔には50のカリヨン（組鐘）があります。ベルギーとフランスの鐘楼群としてユネスコの世界遺産に登録されています。市庁舎には、シント・トロイデン観光局の案内所があるので、観光前に立ち寄るといいでしょう。お土産店があります。ここで、地域特産物を購入することができます。

The city hall has a hall and belfry from the Middle Ages and there are 50 carillons (group bell) in the belfry tower. It is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site part of a group of Belgian and French bell towers. Nowadays, the city hall accommodates the tourism office of Sint-Truiden so I recommend you stop by before sightseeing. There is also a souvenir shop and you can buy regional products here. • ベギン会院（世界遺産）|  Beguinage Church (World Heritage)

1258年に建てられたベギン会院。ほかのフランダース地方のベギン会院とともに世界遺産になっています。ベギン会院の聖アグネス教会は数百年にわたって建てられたため後期ロマネスク、初期ゴシックなどの様式が混ざっています。38の美しい壁画と柱があり、それらは13世紀～17世紀にさかのぼります。1644年の教会のオルガンは、現存するベルギー最古のものと言われています。ベギン会の農園が残っている貴重な場所です。

The Beguinage of Sint-Truiden was built in 1258. It is a world heritage site together with all Beguinage churches in Flanders. The church, devoted to Saint Agnes, was built over the course of several centuries, therefore it is mixed with late Romanesque style and early gothic style. Inside there are 38 beautiful mural paintings and pillars, which date back to the 13th up until the 17th century. It is said that the organ of the church from 1644 is the oldest one in Belgium in existence. Another valuable asset is the remaining farms which were used by the Beguinage society.

修道院の塔は古くから町のシンボル的存在です。196段の階段を昇れば、市内を一望する素晴らしい眺めが待っています。ロマネスク様式の教会の地下に聖堂があります。敷地内の「アカデミーホール」は19世紀の講堂で、八角形の美しい建築はゲントのオペラ座を造ったルイ・ローランドの最高傑作のひとつと言われています。音響が素晴らしく、室内楽などに最適です。さらに敷地には、かつて修道院長が客人との応接に使っていた美しい「皇帝の間」があります

すべてのモニュメントを訪問するための’Trudopas’パスを観光案内所で購入することができます。

The abbey tower has been a symbol of the town since long ago. After 196 steps, visitors enjoy a breath-taking view overlooking the heart of the city and its surroundings. There is a cathedral in the basement of the Romanesque church. The “Academy Hall” on the premises is an auditorium of the 19th century, and the beautiful octagonal architecture is said to be one of the best masterpieces of Louis Roelandts (known for designing the Opera of Ghent). The acoustics are wonderful, and it is most suitable for chamber music. In addition, there is a beautiful “The Emperor’s Hall” which the monastery used for the reception of guests on the premises. You can buy a ‘Trudopas’ at the Tourist Office to visit all monuments. 

• 聖母教会  | Friars Minor Church

中世から何度も再建、増築が繰り返されてきましたが、中央部分は15世紀からのものです。内部には彩色された彫刻の飾りや聖トルードの整骨箱とされるものがあります。地下には宝物殿があります。

The reconstruction and expansion have been repeated many times since the Middle Ages, but the central part is from the 15th century. There are colored sculptural decorations and staple boxes of St. Trudo. There is a treasure house in the basement.

果物の町シント・トロイデン  |  The town of fruits, Sint-Truiden

シント・トロイデンのあるリンブルグ州の辺りはハスペンゴーHaspengouwと呼ばれ、特にリンゴ、洋ナシ、サクランボなどの果物の栽培で知られる地域です。シント・トロイデン近郊では、4月には数千本の果樹に花が美しく咲き誇り、周辺をウォーキングやサイクリングで楽しめます。7月にはサクランボ、9月には洋ナシ、10月にはリンゴが収穫期を迎え、地元の果樹園では果物狩りを楽しむことができます。

The area of Limburg, where Sint-Truiden is located, is called Haspengouw. The specialty of the area is growing  fruits such as apples, pears and cherries. In the month of April, flowers are beautifully booming in thousands of fruit trees around Sint-Truiden. The surroundings can be enjoyed by walking or cycling. In the months of July(Cherries) September(pears) and October(apples), visitors can enjoy fruit picking in local orchards.

Among the nature-friendly apple and pear orchards, juice making is especially popular. In April, there are many attractions such as tours around the local fruit farms (Wednesday at 2 pm and 3 pm), Pop-up blossom bars and ‘fruity’ terraces (Sunday afternoon), fruit picking and so on. リンゴ、洋ナシ、サクランボを育てている農家。養蜂も行っており、はちみつや、パンケーキにぴったりの洋ナシのシロップも作っています。4月には植え付けから集荷、選別、保管まで果物栽培の様々なステージを説明するイベントが開催され、果樹園で作っているリンゴ、洋ナシ、リンゴジュース、マスタード、シロップ、はちみつも試食できます（4月の土曜、午後3時と4時、料金4ユーロ）。また4月には、夜桜、ならぬライトアップされた夜の果樹園の花を巡るナイトツアーもあります。6～7月の土曜はサクランボ狩り、9～10月にはリンゴ狩りも行っています。www.jacobsfruit.be

Farming companies raising apple, pear, cherry are also doing beekeeping, making honey and syrup of pears that is perfect for pancakes. In April, an event is held explaining the various stages of fruit cultivation from planting, and picking to sorting and storage. On top of that visitors can also taste apple, pear, apple juice, mustard, syrup and honey which are made in the orchards (every saturday in April, 3 o’clock and 4 o’clock in the afternoon, 4 euro fee). In addition, there is also a night tour during the month of April. They light up the orchard so visitors can enjoy the cherry blossoms and flowers at night. There are cherry pickings on Saturdays from June to July, and also apple pickings from September to October.

The fertile soil in this area is also suitable for growing vines. The most commonly produced wines are Chardonnay and Pinot Gris.

Food and drinks

In Sint-Truiden you can enjoy several culinary restaurants and cafes. As we have a lot of fruit growing in Sint-Truiden, the local restaurants use this fruit in their menus. But also fruit syrup, honey, mustard, local beers and wines are popular ingredients for the menus.
