Moated Castle Walk

A historic landscape

In Hesbaye, you will soon notice the magnificent castle estates that cross your path. Take a walk around the impressive moated castle of Ordingen. During this short walk, you will see signs of local life: ‘Het Bautershof’, a meeting place for youth groups, and hardworking fruit farmers on the fertile land.

Highlights along the way

A CASTLE WITH MANY CHAPTERS
The first mention of the Castle of Ordingen dates back to 1040. Over the centuries, the former moated castle has been destroyed several times (1467 – Battle of Brustem, 1940 – WWII) and rebuilt. The current owner succeeded in restoring the castle while preserving its authentic history. Today, it is a stylish hotel, refined restaurant and cosy bistro.

GREETING ‘BIG BERTHA’
We walk through the 5-hectare wooded domain of Bautershof, a dream location for outdoor enthusiasts. During the summer, it becomes a paradise for organised youth camps. Along the way, you will encounter ‘Big Bertha’. This 33-metre-high tree, with a circumference of 7 metres, is estimated to be 300 to 350 years old. Admire this exceptional tree and treat it with respect.

NO PEAR PSYLLIDS IN SIGHT
The fertile land around the castle provides the perfect conditions for fruit trees and arable farming. Fruit growers Bels and Billen work year-round preparing for the harvest: pruning trees, protecting blossoms from night frost, controlling pear psyllids with oil and chalk, thinning the fruit, and finally picking and sorting the harvest plus a quality check.

TIP…
If the gate is open, step inside, admire the grounds of this beautifully restored early medieval castle and enjoy a refreshing local beer or a fine regional wine. The perfect way to end your visit to this historic gem.
